GENESIS Museum-based Innovations Labs

Genesis welcomes K-12 students to our Museum-based Innovation Lab programs that use our museum partners’ art and resources to explore the intersection of art and technology to creatively solve the challenges of 21st Century living. Students will work alongside their peers, museum-featured artists, and industry mentors to design, prototype, and build interactive STEAM solutions.

GENESIS Innovation Lab at Challengers

Harnessing the power of the community through collaboration, the GENESIS Lab provides afterschool and summer classes in STEAM learning. In the Innovation Lab students have access to multi-media equipment, technology and software - 3D printers, the Occulus Rift Virtual Reality System, production equipment, robotics, maker tools, and computers with design software.

GENESIS Brotman Mobile Innovation Lab

This unique 36 foot trailer, sponsored by the Brotman Foundation, is outfitted as a state-of-the-art digital makerspace that travels to afterschool programs, community organizations, libraries, and community events providing innovative, “residencies” to reach out and engage students in the exciting world of STEAM learning.

Parent, Teacher, and Community Outreach

The GENESIS team along with volunteers with STEAM education and skills conduct a series of workshops and seminars to expand awareness and understanding of STEAM education and to promote STEAM literacy in the community.

Mentoring Students in STEAM Careers

GENESIS connects students to the variety of STEAM workplaces through individual and group mentoring experiences that have included Google, ArtCenter College of Design, the U. S. Office of Veterans Affairs in Washington D.C., Cedars Sinai Medical Center, UCLA, USC, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, and HubLA.

From the beginning, GENESIS has recognized the many barriers that exist to engaging girls in the STEAM economy of the future. The Girls and Tech program is led by Magalis [...] Martinez MFA, GENESIS Director of Special Projects, who is a highly skilled STEAM educator and learning systems curriculum designer. The program works with teams of young women on special design projects and connects the girls to mentors in STEAM professions and businesses in the community.

The “Inspiration Series” Workshops

GENESIS brings together a diverse group of speakers to serve as mentors that inspire and educate our students to think outside the classroom. Successful technology leaders, artists, educators, entrepreneurs and scientists speak and interact with the students to delve deeper on the projects they are working on. Professional Development Workshops

Many schools are still under-resourced and interactive STEAM educational programs are scarce. Genesis partners with schools and community organizations to provide workshops for teachers in a range of STEAM concepts and activities. Additionally, Genesis is developing curriculum kits for teachers to use in their classrooms to support enhanced STEAM education.

GENESIS “Challenge” Projects

Each year the GENESIS staff works with a teams of students on projects they will take and present at a STEAM “Challenge” event, such as the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. In addition to the satisfaction of creating products that address real life challenges, the students gain experience in “pitching” their product, exposure to the larger world of STEAM-related businesses, and executives in the fields they hope to one day be a part of.
